Types of Sump Pumps
In terms of sump pump types, there are two main types used in homes - submersible and pedestal.
- Submersible Sump Pumps: Submersible sump pumps are installed underwater in a basin (essentially a drilled hole in the basement floor,) and are the more powerful option of the two. This model is quieter thanks to being submerged underwater, and the water helps keep the engine cool, preventing overheating.
- Pedestal Sump Pumps: Pedestal sump pumps require less space than a submersible pump and work well in cramped spaces. Their engine is completely outside of the water basin, though the model is louder because of that. Additionally, this model does not handle debris well, and should only be used for water that does not contain any debris.
Sump pumps have become a necessity in many modern homes. There are more and more options when it comes to selecting a sump pump. Combination pumps include a primary pump which are typically submersible, and a battery-operated backup pump to handle any flooding that occurs during a power outage.
Wi-fi is another helpful addition to the modern sump pump. Pumps enabled with wi-fi can send real-time alerts to homeowners when a flood occurs. Some pumps complete diagnostics and software that can monitor the pump status, alarm, float switch, and more.
Choosing a Sump Pump
Choosing a sump pump requires an understanding of the home and needs. A pedestal pump can’t fill the same role as a submersible pump, and a battery-operated sump pump cannot replace a primary submersible or pedestal sump pump. Each model of a sump pump is best suited to certain situations.
Submersible Pumps
These pumps are best for areas that experience large amounts of rainfall, annual flooding, and extreme weather conditions. Submersible pumps can be bought with higher horsepower and are capable of handling heavier loads than pedestal sump pumps. Additionally, these pumps are best for homes with finished basements used as living space, as they are quieter.
Pedestal Pumps
If space is small and a budget-friendly option is needed, a pedestal style sump pump may be the right choice. Consider this model if flooding-risk is minimal and the property isn’t in an area that receives large amounts of rainfall. These are an excellent option for low-lying homes that otherwise have little risk of flooding or extreme weather.
